Your Team Mates: James Cox
I first heard about Metaswitch when I was deciding what I
wanted to do for a summer job before my final year. What I wanted (but couldn't find amongst
the standard array of banks and accountancy firms) was a job which would be interesting and
challenging when I was in the office but which would let me have my evenings and weekends to
do what I wanted. "

I went to a Metaswitch presentation and I've not looked back since.
I spent a great summer working here in 2005. I lived in a company house just round the corner from the
office with a good bunch of other vacation students; the evenings were full of pub quizzes, socials and
film nights in the house. The work itself was a real development job - it wasn't at all contrived and I
was creating tools which really were used by my colleagues.
Working life here is genuinely enjoyable. Right from the start I was part of a team, given real work
and had experienced engineers valuing my opinions. I get on with everyone I work with and though we're
all busy, the office atmosphere is relaxed, friendly and people have time for each other. I love sport,
so I play sports most lunch breaks - I play tennis, Ultimate Frisbee, football and cricket but you'll be
able to find people to play almost any sport you can name.
Your career here can take almost any direction you like; almost all of our managers and most of our
salesmen start off in the same way - as new graduates in a technical role. Also, unlike most other
companies, if you're really good at a technical job then that's as well respected as doing any other
job well - you don't have to move into management to get pay rises!
This flexibility's paid off for me already - I said in a review a few months ago that I fancied a
stint in a more customer-facing role and here I am in Customer Support, tailoring our solution for a
massive new customer.
