Your Career Path

Early on I was put in charge of my own team, managing three people, and responsible for adding various new features to the product. In 2003, there was a real need to increase our customer support in the US, so I was asked to move out to California. During my time in support, I visited customers in lots of interesting places, including Guam, a lovely tropical island near the Philippines (I definitely hit the jackpot on that one!). I then became head of all the Metaswitch support in the central region of the US, based in San Francisco, managing a team of ten people supporting over 70 customers."

Where you take that career is up to you. The speed with which you progress will be determined by your own ability and desire, not by a constraining, formal career structure. Once you have trained to a productive skill level, your personal development can:

  • continue on a technical path in software and hardware development, or in customer support
  • move into people and project management, taking on broad responsibility for developing your team and delivering projects on time
  • take on a crucial commercial, sales and marketing, or product management role.

It is important to us that you do not feel pigeon-holed. So if you enjoy variety, you can spend time in any of these roles and take advantage of travel opportunities to work with our offices and customers in the US and elsewhere. If you excel in all areas, then you will have the opportunity to run your own division - acting effectively as an entrepreneur within the company. The future is up to you.
