Designed and optimized specifically for use with MetaSphere applications, the Universal Media Gateway incorporates all of the functions needed to support TDM media and signalling connectivity across the full spectrum of legacy telephony protocols.

The UMG is available in two versions. The MG3510 scales from 672 to 24,192 fully protected concurrent calls, while the MG2510 scales from 384 to 1,920 fully protected concurrent calls. Both variants share the same types of common equipment and run the same software.

The UMG supports all widely-deployed TDM access and trunk network protocols. It includes an integrated signalling gateway that handles the transport of SS7 and ISDN signaling messages to the Gateway Control function of MetaSphere over IP, and also provides a media server function for playing network and service announcements and for mixing multi-way calls.

Carrier-class availability is assured with a combination of 1:1 redundancy for common equipment cards and N:1 redundancy for gateway cards. The UMG offers the option of Emergency Stand Alone operation, which preserves full switching and service capabilities to all subscribers served by the UMG in the event of the UMG losing IP network connectivity with its controlling MetaSphere system.
