Newport Networks has signed a five-year agreement with a leading next generation network (NGN) equipment vendor to distribute its Newport 1460 session controller among operators building NGNs. Although the identity of the vendor and the scope of the deal have not yet been disclosed, it appears that as a result of this agreement, other negotiations and joint business activities are underway between the Welsh company and other tier-1 operators.
The Newport 1460 SBC is claimed to deliver vital aspects of security, quality of service and regulatory compliance in VoIP networks while supporting new standards such as IP multimedia subsystem (IMS). The product has been recently certified as interoperable with IMS vendor MetaSwitch's next-generation Class 4/5 Softswitch, which delivers calling features and routing capabilities, such as serving call session control function, SIP application server and multimedia resource functions.
The two platforms support IMS architecture for future-proof wireline and wireless network solutions. Such interoperability is expected to help VoIP providers migrate securely and profitably from time-division multiplexing to all IP based wireless networks.
Mike Wilkinson, VP of marketing, comments: "In essence, telecoms service providers such as BT are migrating to the IMS system, which is the basis of next generation networks. SBC is the key component of IMS infrastructure, as it provides security for networks. It sits at the border point and prevents any attacks from internet or from the signalling or media traffic."
The company recently received Frost & Sullivan's 2006 IP Communications Next-Generation Carrier Infrastructure Entrepreneurial Company of the Year award and its Newport 1460 SBC was awarded the Internet Telephony magazine's Product of the Year 2005 award.
