MetaSwitch and Telefinity's Dash911 division have teamed up in an attempt to simplify E911 deployment by VoIP providers.
The new solution combines MetaSwitch's Class 5 softswitch with Dash911's hosted service platform. This allows VoIP providers to route emergency calls based on their subscribers' locations. When users move their VoIP device from one location to another, they will be able to update their location through an integrated Dash911 web portal.
Call routing is achieved either via traditional MF or SS7 trunks for local subscribers, or via the Dash911 SIP-based switched 911 service.
A ruling by the FCC last year requires VoIP providers to implement systems that deliver emergency calls together with location and contact information to an appropriate dispatch center for the call location. While legal action has modified the implementation and enforcement of that ruling, VoIP providers have been looking to find cost-effective ways to comply.
"The FCC and savvy customers are demanding access to 911 services for all VoIP subscribers," said MetaSwitch CTO Chris Mairs. "Our partnership with Dash911 has been positively received by our customers, as it takes us to the next level in terms of ease of deployment of nationwide VoIP services."
Several service providers, including Public Interest Network Services (PINS), a New York City-based provider with several thousand fixed VoIP lines, are already deploying the MetaSwitch/Dash911 product.
"Public safety should be a concern for all service providers," said PINS CEO David Birnbaum. "We are excited by the opportunities that the MetaSwitch/Dash911 partnership opens up for us."
