Customer Profile - One Communications

One Communications is the largest privately-held competitive local exchange carrier in the U.S. serving more than 160,000 businesses throughout the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic and Upper Midwest regions with more than 2,200 employees and $800 million in annual revenue.

Formed through the merger of three prominent CLECs, One Communications was tasked with integrating its formerly independent network architectures. After rigorous testing and evaluation, it selected MetaSwitch as its common platform for integrated voice and data communications and has begun migrating existing customers its legacy switches leveraging the MetaSwitch Professional Services team to provide a range of migration related services. The MetaSwitch distributed softswitch platform now supports a variety of standalone and converged voice and data solutions for both its business and carrier customers. As a result of these efforts, One Communications is poised to experience substantial switch center savings, a rapid ROI, and the ability to more efficiently serve a growing array of converged voice and data services to its customers.

Background

One Communications was formed as a result of the merger of three companies, all pioneers in the CLEC marketplace, in an effort to build density across a common geographic footprint and customer market segment.

Through its next generation network, One Communications sought a platform that would provide increased redundancy and fault tolerance across its broadened geographic territory, with the flexibility to more easily build new converged products and applications.

The MetaSwitch Solution and its Impacts

MetaSwitch is now deployed throughout One Communications' network with redundant call agent pairs controlling geographically dispersed media gateways to support TDM and IP protocols, and the business and consumer subscribers that they serve.

Together, One Communications and MetaSwitch have begun transitioning several key markets from a legacy voice infrastructure to MetaSwitch's next-generation voice service platforms. The migration, has been completed in Appleton, Green Bay and Madison, all in Wisconsin, and will ultimately expand to include the entire network.

Effective switch migrations require extraordinary attention to detail, and can easily go wrong – resulting in disruption of service to subscribers, and a damaged reputation for the service provider. Supported by the MetaSwitch Professional Services Team and a suite of automation tools it has developed for large-scale switch migration projects, One Communications has had a successful experience – realizing tremendous post-migration operational savings and capital avoidance all with minimal impact to the customer.

"Our partnership with MetaSwitch was a key component in how quickly and smoothly this transition has gone," said Russ Oliver, senior vice president of strategy for One Communications. "The commitment of their entire organization, from the sales team to its highly skilled professional services organization, has provided real value at every interaction."
