Case Studies

A key challenge that all Service Providers face today is creating service differentiation in a crowded market. The MetaSphere SDP, on which all MetaSphere applications are built, supports this strategy by enabling

  • Service Personalization: Tuning existing services to offer an appropriate look & feel, branding and per customer personalization.
  • Service Creation: Rapid and low-cost creation and deployment of new services for horizontal or vertical markets.

A key element of the MetaSphere SDP service creation environment is the Service Creation And Personalization Environment (SCAPE). Compared with the traditional telecom development paradigm, SCAPE cuts the time required for the creation of new features and applications, or the customization of existing services, by orders of magnitude.

This diagram shows MetaSphere SDP SCAPE creating a new TUI and is followed by a description of the solution in more detail.

Service Personalization

This allows Service Providers to modify telephony user interfaces, for example to match the interface used on existing platforms. This results in a seamless migration, and a carrier-specific look and feel, supporting a consistent brand image across all services. There are a number of elements of the solution that make it particularly attractive.

  • Highly granular personalization. The MetaSphere SDP SCAPE can offer very granular personalization of the solution, for example allowing easy creation and maintenance of interfaces specifically for particular enterprise customers, or perhaps third-party Service Providers using the services platform.

  • Rapid response to market requirements. This environment allows very quick implementation of feature changes. This is a result of the underlying architecture, which is both a reflection on the good design processes but also because there are no legacy elements in MetaSphere SDP to slow down customization (many "next-generation" solutions today still include significant legacy components).

  • Consistent across all applications. The MetaSphere SDP ensures that TUIs and GUIs for all applications are coherent, regardless of what customization is unnecessary, and offers unlimited TUIs + GUIs for different customers and brand requirements.

Service Creation

In addition to customizing or personalizing the platform, the MetaSphere SDP supports rapid creation of entirely new services. These are designed in the development GUI and more sophisticated services can employ Java plug-ins. Typically this process is most cost-effectively provided by MetaSwitch's highly experienced professional services team. Alternatively, MetaSwitch can provide training for third party system integrators and developers to manage large custom deployments.

All of the benefits described above, including rapid service development, and consistency across services are equally true when creating new as well as customizing existing services. Further, the fact that the MetaSphere SDP is customized for telephony means that the standard Java application libraries deliver a much richer and more complete set of functions for the development of telecom services than general-purpose SDPs.

To give some examples, a new TUI-based service can be added within days. This might include

  • Information services: talking clock, traffic reports, horoscopes, ...
  • Push services: real-time sports scores, stock price hits threshold, ...
  • Shopping: top-up mobile card, lottery tickets, ringback tones, stock trading, ...

There is effectively no limit to the type of service that can be developed.
