Allied Telesyn Achieves MetaSwitch Certification

Allied Telesyn Achieves MetaSwitch Certification

San Jose, CA: December 12, 2005. Allied Telesyn, a global provider of secure Ethernet/IP access solutions, today announced that its iMAP 9000 series Release 7.0 has achieved interoperability certification by MetaSwitch. The joint solution is already being deployed in service provider networks in the United States.

The combination of Allied Telesyn access technology and MetaSwitch's core IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) switching and applications solutions is especially cost-effective for service providers who are in transition from TDM-based POTS to VoIP converged access networks without an intermediary TDM/IP gateway, as it terminates analog voice and DSL lines with no changes required in the last-mile or customer premise.

"Allied Telesyn's global leadership in IP/Ethernet networking solutions is world renowned and our partnership with MetaSwitch emphasizes the power of service convergence," says Allied Telesyn's Executive Vice President of Marketing and Product Development Philip Yim. "In working with MetaSwitch, we have created a multi-service IP delivery system that allows service providers to simply replace Class 5 Central Office voice switches with a lower cost and future proof VoIP solution."

The highly flexible iMAP platform is a modular chassis that supports traditional lifeline POTS interfaces and enables IP packet convergence by converting POTS traffic to VoIP. Using MGCP VoIP signaling with RTP payloads, the iMAP interoperates with MetaSwitch's range of Class 4/5 switching solutions, including the VP2510 and VP3510 Integrated Softswitches and CA9020 Call Agent, to ensure seamless operation and a rich feature set.

To achieve certification by MetaSwitch, the Allied Telesyn iMAP 9000 series had to pass a rigorous set of interoperability tests, encompassing basic functionality, advanced calling features, scalability and reliability.

"We are pleased to welcome Allied Telesyn to the MetaSwitch Partner Program," said Chris Mairs, MetaSwitch CTO and Senior Vice President of Business Development. "Service providers are rapidly migrating to converged, multi-service access networks, and are looking to their vendors not just to support open standards, but to work together to prove interoperability. Allied Telesyn and MetaSwitch understand that, and are delivering."

In Heavy Reading's August 2005 report: "IP DSLAMs: A Heavy Reading Competitive Analysis," Allied Telesyn's iMAP 9700 was declared a winner in the 10-Gbit/s optical port category, and the MiniMAP 9100 earned an "impressive" 879 out of 1000 possible points.

In combination with MetaSwitch's switching products, some of the key benefits of the Allied Telesyn solution include:

  • Local Calls Remain "On-Net"

Allied Telesyn MGCP functionality ensures that all calls that originate and terminate on the same Access Network (i.e. within a calling area) will consume minimal IP core traffic. The MetaSwitch MGCP call-agent performs call setup, features transmission and call teardown, but the bearer RTP traffic remains local to the last mile.

  • Elimination of TDM/IP Gateways

By enabling Service Provider Core PSTN networks to migrate to end-to-end IP, TDM/IP gateways in the access network can be eliminated. Elimination of these gateways provides significant cost benefits as well as operational efficiencies.

  • One Platform, Any Service

One simple, cost effective solution for all services. The iMAP platform supports POTS, ADSL2+, FTTH (both Active Ethernet and GEPON) and VDSL2. All POTS and VoIP services can ride a common last mile access network to reach either a distributed or centralized softswitch core.
