Metaswitch Networks Announces Clearwater Core

Metaswitch Networks’ Clearwater Core is a hardened, supported version of Project Clearwater, the open-source IMS core designed for the cloud

LONDON – February 6, 2014 -- Metaswitch Networks today announced the availability of Clearwater Core, an implementation of IMS built using Web development methods to provide voice, video and messaging services to millions of users. Available as a software subscription service, Clearwater Core is fully supported by Metaswitch with superior support, custom engineering, bespoke professional services and consultancy.

With no up-front acquisition costs or license fees, Clearwater Core provides a foundation for complete wireline and wireless IP communications while effectively removing the typical cost barriers to deploying IMS-centric Voice over LTE (VoLTE) and Rich Communications Services (RCS). Network operators can leverage their standard compute resources while incurring a minimal software subscription fee based on the number of virtual CPU cores utilized.

Built from the ground up for massively scalable deployments within virtualized public or private elastic compute clouds, Clearwater Core combines the economics of over-the-top (OTT) style service platforms with the standards compliance and reliability expected of telco-grade communications network solutions. The Web services-oriented design inherent to Clearwater Core makes it ideal for instantiation within network functions virtualization (NFV) environments as a virtualized network function (VNF).

“NFV has far-reaching effects in communications networks and this new approach to building networks will provide numerous benefits to network operators, including reductions in both capital and operating costs and the promotion of rapid innovation in the services space,” says Dave Reekie, general manager of Metaswitch’s open source business unit.

Project Clearwater and Clearwater Core

The release of Clearwater Core follows Metaswitch’s highly successful open-source launch of Project Clearwater last May. Metaswitch continues to develop and enhance Project Clearwater because the company believes that openly sharing knowledge, experience and the Project Clearwater codebase will encourage more industry innovation and accelerate the promise of the new software telco. For telcos seeking a commercial product, with the economics of OTT-style service platforms, Clearwater Core is a clear choice.

“We’re pleased to be easing network operators into the NFV revolution with Clearwater Core, where we can provide individual network operators ongoing support and maintenance of their cloud-based IMS Core on a software subscription basis,” says Reekie. “Like Project Clearwater, the open-source effort that started us down this path, Clearwater Core is completely unique in the industry.”

Metaswitch executives will be on hand to discuss Clearwater Core and Project Clearwater at Mobile World Congress, which takes place February 24-27, 2014 at the Fira Gran Via in Barcelona. Later in the year, Metaswitch will discuss all of its IMS and NFV products and strategy in depth at its annual customer event, Metaswitch Forum. Themed “The Brains of the New Global Network,” Metaswitch Forum takes place May 12-15, 2014, at the Hyatt Regency New Orleans.
