Newport Networks and MetaSwitch Deliver Interoperable, Future-proof IMS Solutions

Industry-Leading Distributed Call Control, Applications and Session Border Control Functions Deliver Scalable Migration Platform

Chepstow, UK: March 08, 2006. Newport Networks' 1460 Session Border Controller has been certified as interoperable with MetaSwitch's next-generation Class 4/5 Softswitch and applications solutions following jointly conducted interoperability testing. Both vendors' platforms support the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) architecture for future-proof wireline and wireless network solutions.

MetaSwitch's Class 4/5 Softswitch delivers unparalleled calling features and routing capabilities in a true carrier-class platform. Ranging from a rapidly-deployable single-chassis switch up to a fully distributed 500,000-subscriber network, MetaSwitch scales to fit service provider networks of every size.

Newport Networks' 1460 Session Border Controller provides industry-leading capacity and scalability, comprehensive security, regulatory compliance and extensive Quality of Service (QoS). The companies share a focus on enabling profitable migration to infrastructures based on the evolving IMS standards.

Within the IMS network architecture, MetaSwitch's solutions implement Serving Call Session Control Function (S-CSCF), SIP Application Server (SIP-AS), Multimedia Resource Function (MRF), Media Gateway Control Function (MGCF), Media Gateway (MGW), and Signaling Gateway (SGW).

At the subscriber edge of the core network, the Newport Networks 1460 Session Border Controller provides the IMS Proxy Call Session Control Function (P-CSCF), TISPAN Service Policy Decision Function (SPDF) and the TISPAN Interconnect Border Control Function (IBCF).

"As one of the industry's most successful Softswitch suppliers, MetaSwitch conducts extensive testing with potential partners. Newport Networks is delighted to achieve interoperability between our respective products," said Mike Wilkinson, Vice President of Marketing at Newport Networks. "MetaSwitch shares our focus of future-proofing a service provider's network investment, thereby making for a compelling value proposition for our current and prospective customers," he added. "With distributed session border control that fits well into an IMS architecture, the Newport solution addresses the major issues MetaSwitch and large service providers are focusing on for the future," says MetaSwitch CTO Chris Mairs. "With proven interoperability, the two companies are in a strong position to help providers of VoIP migrate securely from TDM to all-IP networks."
