Polycom, MetaSwitch Announce Voice Over Broadband Interoperability

ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 5, 2001--Polycom's IADs And The MetaSwitch VP3000 Deliver Toll-quality Voice Over Broadband Without Legacy Class-5 Switch

Polycom(R), Inc. (NASDAQ:PLCM), a worldwide leader in broadband communication solutions, and MetaSwitch today announced at SuperComm (booth number 8725) the successful interoperability of Polycom's industry-leading NetEngine Integrated Access Devices (IADs) and MetaSwitch's VP3000, a Broadband Voice Platform that combines Voice Gateway and Class 5 softswitch functions in a single, carrier-class system.

The announcement follows the first public demonstration of interoperability between the companies' products last month as part of the OpenVoB ShowCase at DSLCon in Denver, and marks the completion of a rigorous suite of tests designed to ensure simple, hassle-free Voice over Broadband deployment for service providers.

Upon testing completion, Polycom joined the MetaSwitch Interoperability Partner Program and both companies committed to ongoing interoperability based on open standards, and to rapid, cooperative resolution of any issues reported by customers.

"Polycom has long been committed to promoting the latest open standards and attaining the widest possible IAD interoperability in the Voice over Broadband industry," said Hans Schwarz, senior vice president and general manager of network access products at Polycom. "In fact, all of Polycom's IADS now fully support the BLES standard, as specified by the ATM Forum. Our new relationship with MetaSwitch helps us offer the most robust next-generation end-to-end solution for carriers and service providers."

Testing was conducted by the two companies at MetaSwitch's London and Alameda, Calif. facilities, as well as at the Interoperability Laboratory of the University of New Hampshire (as part of the OpenVoB(TM) CallFest(TM) II).

MetaSwitch's interoperability testing goes well beyond basic interoperability verification to encompass stress testing, modem/fax calls and subscriber features such as Caller ID, with detailed analysis and rapid resolution of any problems that occur.

"The MetaSwitch Interoperability Partner Program reflects our belief in engineering excellence as the key to achieving long-term customer satisfaction, and we are pleased that Polycom has chosen to participate in that vision," said John Lazar, vice president of sales and marketing at MetaSwitch. "Thanks to Polycom's comprehensive set of IAD products, this partnership significantly expands the range of access options that we can offer."

About Polycom's NetEngine Integrated Access Devices

Polycom is the industry leader in Integrated Access Devices (IAD) deployments. As the largest supplier of DSL-based IADs to telecommunication service providers and equipment manufacturers, Polycom offers the broadest interoperability with industry-leading DSLAMs and Voice Gateways.

Polycom's NetEngine IADs are integral to VoDSL and VoIP applications. IADs, located at the customer's facility, enable the transmission of both voice and data onto high-speed broadband networks from the existing copper pair wiring that is in almost every home and office.

The NetEngine family of broadband access equipment is designed specifically for small and medium-sized businesses, as well as the small office/home office (SOHO) and telecommuter markets.

 About the MetaSwitch VP3000

The award-winning MetaSwitch VP3000 integrated Broadband Voice Platform combines broadband voice and Class 5 switching functions in a high density, carrier class system.

The result is an extremely cost-effective Voice over Broadband (VoB) solution which does away with the requirement for an expensive Class 5 switch. Support for the ATM Forum's Broadband Loop Emulation Service (BLES) ensures interoperability with DSLAM and IAD devices from a wide range of vendors.

In addition, the VP3000's future-proof softswitch architecture offers a clear upgrade path to Voice over IP and MPLS (VoIP/MPLS) and other broadband voice services, including wireless and cable.
