Cloud Native is NFV Done Right

Steve Gleave | May 4, 2017 9:04:58 AM

NFV (Network Functions Virtualization) cloud native microservices

There’s a growing sense of impatience and frustration with network functions virtualization (NFV) as service providers are not yet seeing the cost savings or agility benefits they were promised five years ago when the network transformation initiative was first launched. The mood change is certainly understandable, but the underlying causes not entirely understood. The reason for the dissatisfaction is that much of the industry is not yet doing NFV right. To realize the full promise of NFV, service providers and vendors need to embrace the principles of cloud native architectures. Simply porting monolithic software codes from existing network appliances onto virtual machines is doing NFV all wrong.

Maximum Agility: Cloud Native VNFs Put CSPs in the Fast Lane

Steve Gleave | Apr 20, 2017 7:10:00 AM

cloud native

Agility is one of the most important drivers of Network Functions Virtualization (NFV). Traditional network operators want to be faster and more efficient at just about everything from network rollout to new service development to time to revenue. Let’s face it, speed is not exactly a defining characteristic of big telco businesses, as they have been hindered for decades by legacy hardware, monolithic organizations, and cumbersome back office processes. They want the same efficiencies enjoyed by their more software-centric, web-scale rivals and, to that end, they are hitting the accelerator on the road to NFV.

Container Mania Grips the Internet of Talk: Going cloud native for VoLTE with Kubernetes

VoLTE Containers mobile applications Mobile Infrastructure cloud native

I know many of you have been itching to hear more about my adventures with Pokémon Go, following this wildly unsuccessful attempt to garner more page visits by lashing a highly targeted piece (QoS for the Internet of Things) with a universally broad and trending general interest topic. Having made it through the end of the 2016 summer holidays, when most people of sound mind had stopped playing, I hung in there until mid-November, ultimately bidding adieu to Pikachu and hanging up my training pants having reached the moderately respectable level of 23. Knowing that status would forever be immortalized somewhere in the cloud, I somewhat unceremoniously and to the surprise of my kids, who had simultaneously mocked me while fraudulently assuming my persona when it suited them, deleted the app. What life lessons did I learn, in all that time spent catching critters, that I can now impart in a public forum like this? Absolutely nothing. Seriously. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. It really was a colossal waste of time.

Looking Forward to our "Moonshot" Catalyst Presentation at TM Forum Live!

Steve Gleave | Apr 18, 2017 12:00:00 AM

NFV (Network Functions Virtualization) Events EMEA VNF cloud native

The 2017 TM Forum Live! exposition - that’s their exclamation mark, not mine! Although that last one is - is fast approaching and at which our CTO Martin Taylor will be presenting a Metaswitch proposal for one of the forum’s Catalyst proof-of-concept projects.

Metaswitch is actively participating in the “Enabling Digital Marketplaces” Catalyst, which the TM Forum acknowledges is “a bold moonshot” in recognition of its ambitious goal: dramatically accelerating the creation and rollout of services via open, digital marketplaces. These marketplaces will allow service providers to easily find the specific virtual network functions and ecosystems they need from a large, diverse and growing set of offerings from multiple vendors. The TM Forum envisions such digital marketplaces revolutionizing telecommunications in much the same way that Amazon, AirBnB and other online marketers have fundamentally changed how businesses and consumers purchase goods and services.

This Catalyst project is a natural for Metaswitch because we have always been focused on telco transformation. Our history is one of innovation that helps service providers offer new services and adapt to changing market needs. Our ongoing commitment to, and leadership in, the development of cloud native virtual network functions not only highlights and accelerates these efforts, but fits perfectly with the concept of selecting and chaining reusable microservices into service provider “products.”

Catalyst presentations are recorded and we hope to make Martin’s presentation available on this blog, after TM Forum’s Live! has gone, well, Live! (15-18 May, Nice, France).

Carrier-Grade Engineering is Table Stakes for NFV

Steve Gleave | Apr 11, 2017 5:39:44 PM

NFV (Network Functions Virtualization) cloud native

There is ongoing debate, even some angst, about whether NFV can deliver the carrier-grade reliability that communication service providers (CSPs) require. It’s a fair question. After all, one of the fundamental premises of network virtualization is that it is built upon standard, commodity off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware. And we all know that IT-grade servers don’t have the same reliability demands as carrier-grade equipment. Carrier-grade means “five nines” availability (that is, 99.999% uptime), whereas IT-grade cloud infrastructure and operating environments typically achieve around “three nines” reliability.

Video Demo: A Complete VoLTE Deployment Running in Containers

Metaswitch | Apr 6, 2017 7:07:00 AM

VoLTE Mobile Infrastructure cloud native

While Network Operators love the concept of NFV, they are struggling to realize the promised cost savings. As part of our ongoing commitment to delivering innovative cloud native infrastructure solutions, Metaswitch is demonstrating a new approach to NFV, based around containers rather than virtual machines. Employing containers makes NFV much more responsive than previous approaches and opens up radical cost reductions, saving nearly 50 cent or -- 1 million dollars -- in platform costs over five years, for a 1 million consumer VoLTE IR.92 and IR.94 deployment. In this video you will see the Metaswitch VoLTE solution built-out for 1 million subscribers, running in containers, in an on premise cloud. In this demo, we are using bare metal containers but we could just as well be running the containers within VMs, if that methodology is preferred.

Breakthrough Economics: How CSPs Can Bank on Cloud Native VNFs

Steve Gleave | Apr 4, 2017 7:27:00 AM

cloud native

NFV has the potential to change the economics of the communications service provider (CSP) market through major capex and opex savings and new revenue generating services. That said, unquantified “savings” might not be enough of a goal. Operators should actually be looking for breakthrough economic advantages if they are to really reverse the trend of costs outpacing revenue.  Get NFV wrong, and they’ll likely fail to see any return on some very substantial investments.

In the first post in this series, we covered the incredible growth of the four horsemen -- Apple, Google, Facebook and Amazon -- and discussed why they continue to grow, even as they've already reached an unprecedented scale and size. Surprisingly, these four horsemen aren't out to trample service providers: They hardly think of them at all.
