Integrating Legacy Wireline Services Into NGN/IMS

Overview

Next Generation/IMS networks represent a new age in telecom networks that promises the delivery of robust multimedia services across diverse networks. Today, next generation/IMS networks have only the potential of being more feature rich than their legacy predecessors. The reality is that the "new" networks are behind the legacy network when comparing table stakes applications like least cost routing, VPN, and pre-paid.

At the same time, Service Providers continue to look for new, efficient and innovative ways to solve the challenge of how to evolve their fixed and wireless networks to a more cost effective all-IP infrastructure.

Traditional solutions offer upgrades, trade-outs or re-writes all with the same expensive, locked-in, proprietary challenges of their existing IN platforms. Service Providers remain reluctant to pursue these options due to cost and the complexity of the solution. While NG/IMS has done an excellent job of creating a foundation on which new feature rich applications can be built, the revenue-generating, table-stakes applications of the legacy network can continue to provide value and revenue as your network continues to move forward.

The Metaswitch Service Broker enables carriers to maximize their revenue generating legacy voices services while they continue to build-out next generation/IMS networks. This is achieved in a cost effective manner through the Service Broker by utilizing its future proof technology and flexibility that integrates existing TDM based voice services while eliminating the need to re-purchase services to fit specific network requirements.

Features and Benefits

  • Ability to host legacy applications within next generation/IMS networks. The Service Broker's Any to Any technology encompasses full network-to-network, network-to-application and application-to-application connectivity and interworking.
  • Positions IN-based services within the next generation/IMS application layer allowing new service combinations/mash-ups and easy integration to next generation back office systems.
  • Ongoing standardization to introduce, manage and connect existing and new applications by ensuring a cost-effective integration of legacy applications onto new next generation networks along with the flexibility to manage and connect services going forward, regardless of the underlying network.
  • Avoids the need to continue build-up of legacy core network by providing direct access to legacy applications by the next generation/IMS subscriber base.

Solution Elements

Our Service Broker solution is based on the following elements:

  • The Service Broker call processing software platform running on Linux (and other OSs) while interfacing with COTS hardware.
  • One or more Universal Media Gateways as required for media, which could be MG2510 or MG3510 systems, that provide connectivity to the underlying wireless or wireline circuit switched networks.
  • Out-of-the-box solutions for enabling 21 of the most widely used and revenue generating voice services across any network.
  • Professional services, which includes installation as well as a set of tools to provide ongoing support and flexibility to configure the Service Broker for current and future application and network requirements.
