Software innovator’s session border controller technology doesn’t flinch when faced with denial-of-service attacks, signaling storms and enormous spikes in network traffic

San Francisco and Enfield, UK, June 5, 2013 - Metaswitch Networks today released results of a series of tests from Miercom, a leading independent test lab, that show that its Metaswitch Perimeta Session Border Controller software, running on either standard servers or as a complete hardware appliance, offers exceptional scalability, performance and security for service providers. The results can be found right here in this downloadable PDF report: http://www.metaswitch.com/download-miercom-perimeta-report

“Metaswitch’s Perimeta software - either running on off-the-shelf commercial servers, or as a complete hardware appliance - compared well with competitive SBC products we have tested,” says Rob Smithers, CEO, Miercom. “The software was able to achieve higher capacity than its competition in many metrics, such as resiliency under DoS attacks, and comfortably meet performance in other areas as well,” added Smithers.

The Miercom report details how Perimeta, while running on standard commodity servers, successfully processed over 54 million calls at a rate of 1,000 calls per second while under a 15-hour denial-of-service attack, without dropping any calls.

“Our goal is to provide the industry’s most scalable and flexible session border controller which leverages standard hardware for maximum cost effectiveness,” says Alastair Mitchell, Metaswitch’s SVP of product management and marketing. “We’ve proven time and again with our customers that Perimeta is robust and scalable. These results also show that we can help our service provider customers mitigate the risk of outages when malicious activity threatens their networks.”

Indeed, Perimeta SBCs did prove to be scalable, a trait service providers cannot afford to overlook as they connect more and more mobile devices to their IP networks. In the Miercom tests Perimeta was able to handle 4 million concurrent subscriber registrations at 2,222 registrations per second. The system showed scalability in concurrent subscriber capacity with increased hardware capacity, so service providers can be sure they’re not making a dead-end investment.

"Carriers evaluate session border controllers on the product's ability to protect their networks and maintain call quality at all times." says Diane Myers, Principal Analyst, VoIP, UC, and IMS, Infonetics. "With its latest test from Miercom, Metaswitch demonstrates that it can provide the flexibility operators need when their networks are challenged."

Perimeta is a software-centric solution, able to run on standard commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware or even virtualized in the cloud. It is a critical component in the march towards network functions virtualization (NFV) and in helping to transition network operators into true software telcos.
