Metaswitch SIP Session Router Tackles SIP Scalability Challenges for Operators

As the number of SIP endpoints and messages explodes, new product dramatically simplifies session routing and provides critical management insight into all SIP transactions

Mobile World Congress, Barcelona, February 14, 2011 — Metaswitch Networks, a leading provider of carrier systems and communications software solutions, today announced the introduction of the Metaswitch SIP Session Router (SSR), a platform that will meet the needs of operators faced with the rapid growth in LTE devices, SIP-based IM and presence applications, and mobile SIP-trunking services. The Metaswitch SIP Session Router is purpose built to address the problems that come with mass adoption of this lightweight protocol, and will be available directly from Metaswitch and through an OEM agreement with a global telecommunications manufacturer.

In the absence of a dynamic route discovery mechanism, SIP has relied upon static routing tables, provisioned manually on multiple SIP networking elements that include session border controllers, wireless mobile switching centers, IMS call session control functions and Class 4 and 5 soft switches. This has resulted in a complex mesh of direct interconnects and multiple route tables that must be updated manually and are especially prone to operator error. Centralizing the routing of SIP messages through a single, highly redundant platform, the Metaswitch SSR elegantly resolves this challenge and provides unmatched network monitoring, diagnosis and fault isolation capabilities through tight integration with the MetaView Service Assurance Server.

"The simplicity and extensibility of SIP has proven to be a major attraction for operators and application developers, and for good reason," said Steve Gleave, vice president of marketing at Metaswitch Networks. "But this pleasant exterior can mask the inner realities of complex network design and administration. With mobile networks set to accommodate a ten-fold hike in SIP endpoints and traffic, Metaswitch is delivering a product that lets the core infrastructure and operator administration scale accordingly."

Built to scale, the Metaswitch SSR is designed to support 10M BHCA in stateless, transaction stateful and call stateful modes, allowing operators to provide different levels of service across the SIP signaling network domain. Sitting between SIP network nodes, the Metaswitch SSR also ensures SIP interoperability by normalizing disparate protocol implementations, and enhances SIP network service availability through SIP application server load-balancing.

Citing how the SIP Session Router platform is a necessary network element for service providers, a global tier one telecommunications manufacturer is also adopting the Metaswitch SSR technology into its portfolio of IP-based solutions to offer its customers purpose-built SIP session management functionality.
