MetaSwitch Announces Availability of VP3000 Broadband Voice Platform

ALAMEDA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 1, 2001--Product availability enables deployment of profitable
Voice-over-Broadband services based on viable long-term platform

MetaSwitch today announced general availability of the MetaSwitch VP3000 Broadband Voice Platform in North America, with orders being accepted for delivery of production systems within 60 days.

With voice gateway and Class 5 Softswitch function integrated into a single high-density carrier class system, the VP3000 enables service providers to easily deploy toll-quality Voice-over-Broadband (VoB) and thereby rapidly generate profits from their previously low-margin (or even loss-making) broadband data infrastructure.

The MetaSwitch VP3000 offers both an immediately deployable VoB solution and a clear upgrade path to a fully converged network, with distributed Softswitch and VoIP capabilities, alongside next-generation voice/data services.

Prior to this announcement, broadband voice solutions required legacy Class 5 switches to provide calling services and PSTN/SS7 connectivity via the GR-303 protocol, locking the provider into a legacy circuit-switch architecture.

The VP3000 eliminates this requirement, dramatically reducing the per-line deployment cost and for the first time enabling service providers to plan for a seamless transition to a next-generation network.

"We believe that products like the MetaSwitch VP3000, which can provide PSTN telephony services without Class 5 switches, will find strong interest from service providers seeking to generate profits from their broadband data infrastructure while building a workable next-generation strategy," said Keith Mayberry, Analyst, Access Networks, RHK. "In particular, we expect to see products like this being taken up by CLECs and IXCs in greenfield situations, as well as ILECs planning next-generation networks or entering markets out of their territory. This announcement from MetaSwitch is an important step in convincing such service providers that this technology is available and ready for prime-time today."

The high-density system architecture is capable of supporting up to 32,000 subscribers in a single chassis, with 3 chassis per 7' rack. Initial trial deployments will likely use the entry-level configuration of 672 concurrent calls, with full deployments upgrading to multiple systems each handling 2,000 concurrent calls -- or more as capacity is upgraded in future releases.

With upgrades planned for a distributed intelligent call agent and high-density media gateway architecture, the MetaSwitch VP3000 will keep pace with service providers' growing demand for broadband voice capacity and new revenue-generating subscriber services.

MetaSwitch is simultaneously releasing its integrated Element Management System (EMS) which simplifies administration of routine tasks, as well as providing detailed views of every system element for diagnostic or support purposes. If preferred, service providers can integrate the system management into their own operations support systems thanks to open SNMP and Corba interfaces.

MetaSwitch will be showing the VP3000 in booth No. 8725 at SuperComm in Atlanta, June 3-7. For further information, or to schedule a briefing session, please contact Tony Downes on 510 748 8230, email td@metaswitch.com.
