Cloud Native is a Hot Topic

Industry Trends cloud native

I attended SDN World Congress in The Hague a couple weeks ago and among many meetings there I had a conversation with David Snow, Principle Analyst for IP Services Infrastructure at Current Analysis.  We both agreed that “cloud native” has become a hot topic in the NFV world of late, and I was able to share our views on cloud native with him.  He has just published a blog post on this topic at https://networkmatter.com/2016/11/02/microservices-how-cloud-native-are-network-vendors-today/

Fixed-Line Transformation NFV (Network Functions Virtualization) Mobile Infrastructure Industry Trends

Metaswitch has gained a wealth of NFV experience by helping customers take our virtual network functions (VNFs) from proof of concept to lab trials to production networks. Along the way we have learned a lot about what works and what doesn’t and how to overcome unexpected issues as they arise.

Want to know what happens to the video footage left on the cutting room floor, after the professionals have taken all they need... or can handle? Well, we sweep it up and recycle it - naturally! Check out this short outtake reel from a recent Intel interview and learn how Metaswitch is pioneering cloud-native virtualized network functions to deliver on the promise of 5G and IoT. The sentiment is sincere and the proposition genuine but the performance leaves a lot to be desired. Don't say I didn't warn you!

Employing Blockchains in Consumer IoT Infrastructures

Internet of Things (IoT) Industry Trends

Like many of you, I have taken a back seat over the last few years as Bitcoin bedlam has swelled, subsided and swelled once again. Let’s be completely honest -- while a form of currency that can’t be systematically plied from my wallet by my teenager and plunked down on the counter of the Hot Topic at my local mall in exchange for various useless Once Upon A Time-branded items is appealing, I have little use for it in my daily life.  Naturally, I put my indifference on hold for a brief time, along with the rest of our (typically apathetic)1 industry, when Verizon Ventures announced in September 2015 that they see value in the Bitcoin Blockchain.2 I quickly moved on, however, when I remembered how confused I was when I previously had read up on Blockchains and how little I cared about something that had nothing to do with MPLS or a PCE.

What Are Operators Doing With Virtualization Today?

Dave Reekie | Jul 14, 2016 9:00:00 AM

Metaswitch NFV (Network Functions Virtualization) virtualization VNF Forum 2016 Industry Trends

The vision for full network functions virtualization (NFV) can look complex and daunting to any network operator. But it is important to remember that virtualization is not an all-or-nothing transformation, and that operators can take an incremental approach via a variety of different paths to realize the benefits of NFV today.

Why Telco Futurism Matters Now

Metaswitch Consumer communications Business communications Voice, video and messaging Forum 2016 Industry Trends

At our recent Metaswitch Forum, Dean Bubley of Disruptive Analysis presented a thought-provoking view of what futurism means for telecom service providers and challenged us all to step outside our comfort zones and think differently about how we develop communications products and services. Telco futurism is essentially futurism for the telecom industry. And it’s more than just robots, artificial intelligence or folks in labs inventing crazy things that may or may not become commercial realities in ten or 20 years’ time.

How to Deliver Telco-Grade Services from the Cloud

NFV (Network Functions Virtualization) Cloud White papers VNF Industry Trends

CTO Martin Taylor has written a new white paper that aims to answer one of the biggest questions about network functions virtualization (NFV): how can telco-grade availability be achieved if virtual network functions (VNFs) are moved to IT-grade cloud environments? Operators require “five nines” -- that is, 99.999 percent -- availability to deliver telco-grade services. That’s equivalent to about six minutes of downtime in a year. While the best industry-standard servers come very close to five-nines availability, cloud computing environments can’t meet telco-grade requirements. At best, a cloud computing environment delivers 99.95 percent availability. That equates to roughly 260 minutes of downtime per year.

We know that network functions virtualization (NFV) is highly complex, even for large network operators and experienced network engineers. Figuring out how to implement and orchestrate virtual network functions (VNFs) in a virtualized environment is time-consuming, complicated and expensive. That’s why we’re excited to be working with GigaSpaces on the new NFV Lab, an on-demand learning lab that provides network engineers an easier way to learn about NFV.
